Adiantum capillus-veneris or Adiantum pedatum
AKA: Five-finger fern, Maidenhair, Rock fern
Portrait: Fern. Native to Europe, North America, and Asia. Commonly found in cool, moist, shady sites. Plant is harvested as needed throughout the year.
Medicinal Element: All parts above-ground
Herbal Properties: Antispasmodic, expectorant, refrigerant, tonic
Summary: Maidenhair fern is typically suggested to treat various forms of upper respiratory congestion. A warm decoction loosens and clears out excess mucus brought on by the common cold, influenza, bronchitis, asthma, laryngitis, and chronic sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses). Externally, maidenhair fern preparations are said to relieve itchy scalp, dandruff, and give the hair a healthy glow. Do not use maidenhair fern during pregnancy. Large doses of this herb may cause vomiting.
