Corydalis yanhusuo or Corydalis solida

AKA: Yan hu suo

Portrait: Perennial. Native to northern China, Siberia, and Japan but commonly cultivated in the eastern and northeastern regions of China. Small pink to mauve flowers appear in April and May in delicate clusters. Roots are harvested in late spring and early summer.

Medicinal Element: Roots

Herbal Properties: Analgesic, antispasmodic, sedative

Summary: Used by Chinese herbalists since at least the 8th century, corydalis is primarily prescribed for its analgesic properties. Said to relieve discomfort from almost any cause, this herb is chiefly prescribed for menstrual cramps and abdominal pain ranging from appendicitis to gastric ulcers. Occasionally used to alleviate pain resulting from traumatic injury, corydalis possesses a sedative component that may reduce physiological responses to stress and shock. Do not take corydalis if pregnant or breast-feeding. Consult your health care provider if suffering from serious and unrelenting pain.
