Summary: Saw palmetto is a Native American herbal standard used to loosen and relieve chest congestion characteristic of bronchitis, asthma, influenza, and the common cold. Occasionally prescribed for individuals convalescing from long-term illnesses, saw palmetto is said to enhance the function of the glandular and reproductive systems in both men and women. It has become increasingly popular since the discovery of its anabolic properties which appear to mimic the effects of testosterone. In this capacity, saw palmetto has been used as an agent to build tissue, promote muscle recovery following injury, and strengthen bones. It is also known to be effective in the treatment of female-specific cystitis brought on by an increase in sexual activity and benign prostatic hypertrophy, or prostate enlargement, in men. Always seek the advice of a qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal remedies for prostate-related problems.
