Ipecac
AKA: Ipecacuanha
Portrait: Deciduous shrub. Native to and cultivated in South America, especially Brazil. Found in moist, shady woods with dense, wet undergrowth. Roots of 3-year-old plants are harvested in summer when its small white flowers bloom.
Medicinal Element: Roots
Herbal Properties: Emetic, expectorant
Summary: In low doses ipecac is a strong expectorant useful for loosening chest congestion associated with acute asthma attacks, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, and influenza. It is sometimes used, particularly in South America, for treating amebic dysentery, an infection caused by parasites living in the large intestine. It is perhaps best known as an agent that induces vomiting. Moderate levels of ipecac can entirely void the stomach of its contents, however, it should be noted that high doses of this herb are lethal. Only use ipecac under the advice of a knowledgeable herbalist. Never exceed the recommended dosage of this herb. If using ipecac to induce vomiting following poisoning, do not use if poisoning is a result of ingesting petroleum-based or corrosive substances. Never use ipecac preparations in children under one year of age.
