AKA: European hop, Hop bine

Portrait: Perennial. Native to temperate zones of the northern hemisphere, especially northern Europe, mountainous areas of southern Europe, Britain, and Asia. Naturalized and cultivated in North America. Yellowish-green flowers bloom from August to October; female flowers are preferred over male.

Herbal Properties: Anodyne, antispasmodic, diuretic, febrifuge, hypnotic, sedative, tonic

Summary: Originally used as a preservative in ale, hops are medicinally noted for their relatively rapid calming effect on the central nervous system. Recommended for insomnia and restlessness, hops can stimulate the appetite and soothe muscle spasms associated with intestinal and menstrual cramps. Women who experience premenstrual syndrome have used hops successfully for alleviating irritability and bloating. Individuals diagnosed with clinical depression should avoid using hops.
