Summary: An ancient Chinese herbal standard, dong quai is often regarded as the supreme female tonic or “female ginseng.” It is used to treat a myriad of gynecological problems including menstrual cramps, heavy flow, irregular periods, premenstrual syndrome, and infertility due to hormonal imbalances. Perimenopausal women experiencing hot flashes and changes in vaginal secretions claim regular and moderate use of dong quai alleviates these symptoms and may eliminate them altogether. Men and women alike use this herb to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and iron-deficiency anemia. It also reputedly strengthens liver function and optimizes blood circulation. Do not use dong quai if pregnant.
